The Breathalyser 5000

In Erk Pod Round Table 3 Erk asked Richard about field sobriety tests when on the job as a Police Officer. We spoke of the test in the field & the use of a portable breathalyser machine on the side of the road. Then if you failed, it was back to the Police Station for the test on the large breathalyser machine that was called in Richard’s case the Breathalyser 5000. It also got a mention on Erk Pod Maxi 97.

So here’s a look at the process.

PLEASE NOTE THAT DRINK DRIVING LIMITS, PROCEDURES AND PENALTIES DIFFER FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION. INSERT YOUR LOCAL VERSION *HERE*

Erk Pod can take no responsibility if you are stupid enough to drink then drive. There are several commercial breath test units and testing machines in some hotels etc. Laws (in NSW at least) do not allow you to rely on these machines. This is an overview only.

DON’T DRINK DRIVE!

Above – In many countries, the first test will be with a portable breathalyser on the side of the road. If you pass that, drive on. If not, proceed to step two.

Above – If you fail a breath test or a Field Sobriety Test, you’ll be arrested and taken to a Police Station for a further breath test or a blood test. In Erk’s home state of NSW at least, it is also an offence to refuse a roadside breath test or a later blood or alcohol test.

Above – If you are in the US or have watched US TV, you would have seen a Field Sobriety Test. Here’s a YouTube example.

Above – The final step unless you have a blood test. A man has a breath test on a typical large Breathalyser machine. Fail this one and you’ll be going to court for drink driving.

Above – This is an infamous YouTube video of a person in a Police Station who should be having a go on the Breathalyser 5000
